Dark Ranters Presents:
The Princess Twilight Special
with ImpulsiveSpidercide and GearsX

GearsX: Friends, bronies, pegasisters! Welcome to the Princess Twilight Special blog! Clockin' in is I, GearsX...

ImpulsiveSpidercide: And I, ImpulsiveSpidercide . . .

GearsX: Here to discuss our favorite bookish unicorn, Twilight Sparkle. Last time we discussed My Little Pony, we reviewed the show and how it became a pop cultural juggernaut. In the season three finale of My Little Pony, Twilight Sparkle became a alicorn princess and experienced the trials and tribulations of being a princess in Season Four. We'll discuss some of the episodes of the show focused on Twilight and how she came a long way for the past four years up to this point. We'll also review the episodes, Magical Mystery Cure and Twilight's Kingdom, and give our thoughts about Twilight becomin' an alicorn princess.  Who can remember the very first episode back in 2010 when Twilight never even heard of the concept of friendship?

ImpulsiveSpidercide: And then she had to work with five other ponies that she couldn't stand to defeat Nightmare Moon, the fallen sister of Princess Celestia!

GearsX: They would eventually become BFFs in order unlock the Elements of Harmony to free Princess Luna from her evil persona of Nightmare Moon. Since then, Twilight went through this four year journey to study magic and the values of friendship.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: As Twilight Sparkle stayed in Ponyville with her trusty companion Spike and the five ponies that would join her as part of the Mane Six, she slowly gained a deeper appreciation for them all and what their friendship meant to her. Also, this ongoing lesson about friendship was the source of the letters she would frequently write to Princess Celestia --- so the young children primarily watching the show could learn about friendship, too, of course.

GearsX: One thing I failed to mention in our review of the show was these messages to Celestia didn't feel so shoehorned in but I digress. Let's discuss some of the episodes centered around Twilight. In Boast Busters, Twilight didn't wanna display her talents due to the fact the ponies may look down upon her as a showoff.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Which was provoked by Trixie, "the Great and Powerful," acting like such an arrogant witch. Rubbing her magical skills in the other ponies' faces . . . until she accidentally pissed off an overgrown Ursa Minor and Twilight had to use her own (real) magic to calm the giant bear cub down.

GearsX: Trixie would return in Magic Duel to give Twilight the boot out of Ponyville thanks to an evil amulet. Twilight did return to Ponyville and trick Trixie into removin' the amulet without the use of magic. All it took was deception. Twilight could've been an excellent criminal mastermind.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Indeed, it's much better for Ponyville that she's on the side of good instead of evil.

GearsX: The first episode of season two where ol' Discord turned the Mane Six against each other and turned Ponyville into something straight out of Bubsy 3D.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. It looked like something out of one of those zany anime where nothing looks like it makes sense at all. I mean, chocolate rain! CHOCOLATE RAIN! Dafuq!

GearsX: That meme never gets old. Much like her fellow ponies, Twilight would end up having her Element taken away by Discord but Princess Celestia and some gas from Spike would convince her not to give up. Typical anime trope but makes sense for the most part.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: The gas was actually Princess Celestia sending back Twilight's friendship letters to remind her of what she was fighting for. Spike just happens to be the medium through which those letters are sent and received. Oh, and Discord didn't have to do anything to Twilight Sparkle; she broke on her own from seeing her friends so ruined by him.

GearsX: Oh, no friendship, no magic. Who can also remember Twilight goin' pants on head insane because she failed to deliver a friendship report to Celestia?

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah, that was horrifying. Seriously.

GearsX: So much so, she enchanted her own doll just to solve a problem. Dick move, Twilight, dick move.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yes. Very much a dick move.  And not just to solve a problem, but to create a problem that she could "conveniently" solve. And all it did was make things worse.

GearsX: Every single pony goin' gaga over a ratty old toy.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: And Big Macintosh just wanted the toy even after the spell was taken off. Hilarious.

GearsX: Celestia had to clean up Twilight's mess and lecture her about what she had done.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Uh-huh, which was quite a shocking moment, as it was kinda the first time we'd seen Celestia really pissed off.

GearsX: Princess Celestia wasn't gonna send Twilight back to magic preschool or anythin' but still, she did scold her about causin' a problem just to solve it.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah.

GearsX: And finally, the season three premiere. The Mane Six head to the Crystal Kingdom to deal with the demonic Sombra. There was a test for Twilight and what was the test?

ImpulsiveSpidercide: The test was to find the one thing that could restore the Crystal Empire after the horrors inflicted upon it by King Sombra.

GearsX: Which was Twilight sacrificing her life to save the kingdom. If Twilight hadn't give Spike the Crystal Heart, Sombra would've killed Cadence and every other pony within the Crystal Empire.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. And he would have probably enjoyed it, too, the freaking monster.

GearsX: Damn right. Now that we discussed the Twilight-centered episodes, let's review Magical Mystery Cure. Before we do that, something was brought to my attention. Many bronies and pegasisters hated the season three finale. They hated the fact Twilight was gonna become an alicorn. They didn't want to see her taking the next step in life.

ImpulsiveSpidecide: Which may well be a meta-commentary on how too many people in this world don't wanna grow up.

GearsX: To fellow our bronies and pegasisters, we know you got your reasons for not liking Magical Mystery Cure but there's gonna come a day where someone will take that next big step in his or her life. There's only so much Twilight can learn as a student. We all know she was gonna graduate eventually. And her princess coronation symbolizes school graduation basically. Whether you like it or not, Twilight is an alicorn now. As an alicorn princess, she has a whole new set of challenges ahead. If the producers decided to get complacent with Twilight still learning about friendship and magic, no doubt the show could go downhill. You got anythin' to add to this?

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Not really, honestly.

GearsX: Let's begin our review of Magical Mystery Cure. I thought the episode was pretty good despite have a bit of a pacing issue. Music numbers were a bit tolerable this time unlike the season two finale. Sure, Magical Mystery Cure had more music numbers than Canterlot Wedding but still, they didn't feel as forced. However, some scenes of the episode didn't really call for some of the music numbers. The highlight of the episode was Twilight becomin' a princess.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Indeed.

GearsX: It was almost a tearjerkin' moment.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. It was beautiful. If I were a more soft-hearted guy, I'd have shed a tear.

GearsX:  Like I said, the pacing was an issue. The main conflict involvin' the Mane Six's cutie marks was solved almost immediately.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Uh-huh.

GearsX: A little bit more time on the main conflict couldn't have hurt. Other than that, it was a beautiful episode. The season three finale marked the end of Twilight's days as a student and Twilight's ascension as a princess began in season four. There's a story arc in the fourth season involving Twilight's rise as a princess.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Culminating in the finale of the fourth season.

GearsX: Which we will get into later. In the season four premiere, Twilight is still gettin' use to her new status as a princess. She's tryin' to learn how to fly and is having trouble with her wings. She was unsure about her new role as princess and chose not to wear her crown.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. I get what that's like.

GearsX: Around the time the Summer Sun Celebration was being prepped, something within the Everfree Forest begins to wreak havoc.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Because apparently, the Harmony Tree was losing its power. And that meant the monsters in the Everfree Forest could escape and wreak havoc.

GearsX: Ponyville being swallowed up by vegetation. The Mane Six assumed it was Discord's doing but Discord said he had nothing to with it. Twilight and her friends seek out Zecora for answers but she doesn't know either. However, she does give the new princess a purple potion that could only work with magic.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: It turns out that Princesses Celestia and Luna are out of commission, and since Cadence is all the way in the Crystal Empire, the Mane Six are worried that if Twilight goes down on the mission, so falls Equestria.

GearsX: With this potion, Twilight learns how Luna became Nightmare Moon and witnessed the Alicorn sisters' fight with Discord. It is in those flashbacks she learned the Tree of Harmony kept the Everfree Forest controlled and contained. With heavy hearts, the Mane Six were forced to give their elemental magic to the tree to restore it and return the forest back to normal.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Uh-huh, and right after Discord gave Twilight a bit of a stealth mentor deal in goading her into realizing that her real responsibilities lay with her friends. Not with being Equestria's Princess.

GearsX:  For the sake of this blog, we'll not discuss all of season four. We're only gonna talk about key episodes that led up to the season finale.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Sure.

GearsX: In the first key episode, Rarity Takes Manehatten, Rarity competes in a contest to show off her clothing line. She gives another contestant named Suri Polomore some of her fabric to make clothing of her own but she ends up ripping off Rarity's designs. Suri lacked remorse for her actions which forced Rarity to gather her friends to make a new clothing line.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. What a vicious mare.

GearsX: Rarity wins the contest and gives Coco Pommel her job as costume designer. The next key episode is Rainbow Falls. Rainbow Dash is training for the Equestria Games with Fluttershy and Bulk Biceps and they're representing Ponyville. Rainbow Dash finds herself torn between two teams, her team and the Wonderbolts.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: On the one hand, it's been her dream to join the Wonderbolts. On the other hand, she's too loyal to her friends in Ponyville to just desert them.

GearsX: Dash tried to get out of it by faking an injury but thanks to some pep talk from Soarin, whose wing was clipped at the time, Dash made the right choice by staying with Ponyville. Next key episode is Pinkie Pride, you can take this one.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah. To make a long story short, we all know Pinkie Pie takes pride in being able to make ponies, especially her friends, laugh. And her party-throwing skills, of course. So what happens when another pony shows up with even better parties and jokes than her? She feels jealous, of course. However, after learning that this pony who seems to be upstaging her at everything she takes pride in was actually inspired by her and was similarly lonely and withdrawn before that, Pinkie Pie realizes that her friends' joy and laughter is more important than who's causing it. And she makes peace with her unwitting rival, who was voiced by "Weird Al" Yankovic, well-known for his parodies of popular songs.

GeasX: Weird Al did a terrific job as Cheese Sandwich. The fourth key episode is It Ain't Easy Being Breezies. Once again, lead forth.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: The lesson Fluttershy had to learn was that sheltering the Breezies in her house wasn't really helping them and to be kind, she had to force them out to find their way on their own.

GearsX: Not to mention the main Breezy, Seabreeze, was being extremely pushy with his fellow Breezies and that didn't help matters either. The fifth and final key episode is Leap of Faith and the unicorn con artists, the Flim-Flam Brothers, return in this one. Granny Smith revealed she was once a celebrity swimmer and high diver but she can't do that anymore due to her age.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: And then she got a miracle tonic from the Flim-Flam Brothers, which made her bones as sturdy as they were when she was young.

GearsX: But this was just another scam from Flim and Flam and they convinced Applejack to keep her yapper shut because the truth would shatter Granny's confidence.  But Applejack wasn't gonna have it. She tells her grandmother the truth about this medicine being a placebo and her swimming talents was really dormant within her the entire time.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Uh-huh. And how did Applejack find out it was a scam?  The guy the Flim-Flam Brothers supposedly cured was an actor.

GearsX: Now we get to the big one, Twilight's Kingdom. We meet Tirek. In case you don't know who Tirek is, he was the villain from the old MLP series. He appeared in the TV special, Rescue at Midnight Castle. His G4 form resembles Trigon if he were a demon centaur and had only two eyes.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yep. And speaking of Trigon, we all know who Twilight Sparkle's VA previously voiced.

GearsX: Raven from Teen Titans. Tirek was imprisoned in Tartarus, MLP's own version of Hell.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yep. Hell's right next door to Equestria.

GearsX: Tirek absorbed the magic of every pegasus, unicorn, and earth pony he came across and he was hellbent on destroying Equestria. Luna, Celestia, and Cadence knew Tirek was comin' for them next, so the three princesses gave Twilight Sparkle their magic. This led to an awesome DBZ-style fight between Twilight and Tirek. If you are wondering why Twilight's friends weren't there, it's because Twilight didn't want them to get hurt and Discord was helping Tirek along the way.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yeah, bastard. He does learn his lesson when Tirek betrays him, too.

GearsX: When Tirek presents all of Twilight's friends before her after the battle, she was forced to give up her magic too. I failed to mention after the Mane Six restored the Tree of Harmony in the first episode, they received some mysterious box.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: The box had six locks, six locks for six keys.  Twilight spent the entire season trying to figure out where the keys were. Turned out that the keys manifested from each of the Mane Six remaining true to their Element despite all temptation to the contrary.

GearsX: Those keys were a spool of rainbow thread, a rubber chicken, a Wonderbolt pin, a flower, a coin, and a pendant that once belonged to Tirek's brother, Scorpan.  And what was inside the box? Rainbow powers. The Mane Six used their temporary rainbow powers to absorb the magic back from Tirek and banished him to Tartarus permanently.

ImpulsiveSpidercide:  Yep. They were basically a Super Mode version of the Elements of Harmony. Earned by upholding the virtues their Elements represented through difficult times.

GearsX: It was cool to see the Mane Six become rainbow-colored Super Saiyans.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Very.

GearsX: All the ponies of Equestria were given back their magic and Twilight gains a new castle after her library/home was destroyed, another thing I failed to mention. How was Twilight's Kingdom? It was awesome. The big payoff was well worth it. The singing was kept to a minimum. And the battle between Twilight Sparkle and Tirek was epic. Even as a princess, Twilight Sparkle is an absolute badass. What did you think of the villain, Tirek?

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Very badass. It's not a rule that princesses can't be badass. Otherwise, we wouldn't have Wonder Woman. Or Starfire and Blackfire. But yes, Tirek was a pretty formidable and frightening bad guy, and I like him for that.  I also like how he manipulated Discord into betraying Equestria by playing on Discord feeling stifled in his role as a "good guy" and wanting to be free to do as he wished again. Of course, being free to do as you wish isn't necessarily worth losing your friends and other loved ones, which is why most people in the real world (or other fictional universes) tend to restraint their destructive, chaotic impulses.

GearsX: Twilight's journey from pupil to princess has come full circle. What does the future hold for Twilight and her friends in Season Five? I do know there will be another twenty-six episodes but sadly, we won't get our pony fix until next year.

ImpulsiveSpidercide: Yep. All the way to 2015.

GearsX: I do hope Hasbro shows some form of preview at this year's San Diego Comic Con. Maybe no air date yet but at least something. That about does it for the Princess Twilight Special. This is GearsX clockin' out...

ImpulsiveSpidercide: And ImpulsiveSpidercide, saluting Princess Twilight Sparkle for reminding us all that friendship is the true magic, the light and the way!
In honor of the season 4 finale of My Little Pony, Spidercide and myself did a blog about Princess Twilight Sparkle. Maybe a few weeks late but better late than never.
